My name is Peg Papanek and I have been single handedly leading an effort to repeal Connecticut's 15-inch handlebar law. As a result, State Rep's. Wilbur and Zalaski have co-sponsor proposed bill # 6937...

v ... The bill is currently sitting with the CT Transportation Committee. They need to know by the end of this week (2/15), that riders would like the CT handlebar height restriction eliminated.

It would be helpful if [BIKERS NATIONWIDE] would put a phone call and email into the 2 most important people on the committee. Easy to follow instructions are below. If everyone would pass this on to their riding friends, who pass it on to their friends, we have the potential to move mountains. In advance, "thank you" to everyone who is willing to spend a few moments of their lives to help me with this cause!

Many Thanks!
Peg

Either leave a message or tell the assistant,

"My name is ______________ and I am calling to ask that (Senator Defronzo) (State Representative Guerrera) support the proposed handlebar bill # 6937. State Rep. Wilber, who co-sponsored the bill with Rep Zalaski, had an OLR legislative report done that concluded that high handlebars are not a safety issue. The report also found that there has been a trend across the country to change the height restriction law, with 16 states completely eliminating all height restrictions. Would (Senator Defronzo) (State Rep Guerrera) please support eliminating this law, and raise bill #6937 for public hearing? Thank you for your time......"

In addition, you can also send an email. Calling is always most effective but an added email helps a lot! Doing both is best. Below are email addresses and a copy of an email that you can "cut and paste".... It won't take much of your time and will be of great help!

Subject: Please support proposed handlebar bill # 6937

Dear ________________,

I am writing about a current law, CT statute # 14-80i(b), which reads: "No person shall operate a motorcycle on a highway or in any parking area for ten or more motor vehicles if the motorcycle is equipped with handlebars that are more than fifteen inches in height above the uppermost portion of the seat when the seat is depressed by the weight of the operator."

It is my understanding that a proposed bill, # 6937, to repeal the above statute, is with the Transportation Committee. Rep. Wilber, who co-sponsored this bill with Rep Zalazki, had an OLR legislative report done that concluded that high handlebars are not a safety issue. The report also found that there has been a trend across the country to change the height restriction law with 16 states completely repealing the law. Based on the facts that were found, I am asking that the current 15-inch handlebar law 14-80i (b) be completely repealed. I would like to have the freedom of choice as to the height of my handlebars when I ride in CT. Would you please support eliminating this law, and raise bill #6937 for public hearing?

Thank you,

(your name)
